FRIDAY 24TH MAY

W S GILBERT                                                                                       MW

A talk by David Howe on the English humourist (1871 Bab Ballads) and librettist. WS Gilbert is best known for his collaboration with Arthur Sullivan,  contributing wit and satire to their many light operas.

FRIDAY 31ST  MAY

(Please note that this is a change to the programme originally announced)

NICHOLAS HAWKSMOOR                                                               SL

We are delighted to announce a talk by Gordon Cain, a surveyor specialising in the conservation and restoration of historic buildings. Gordon recently came and gave us a really interesting talk about Hereford Cathedral, has agreed come and talk to us about architect Nicholas Hawksmoor.

Born in 1661, at the age of 18 he became a clerk to Sir Christopher Wren and worked with him on all his major architectural projects such as the rebuilding of St Paul’s cathedral. He would later work with Vanburgh in building Blenhim Palace, as well as projects under his own direction.  It is perhaps unfortunate that Nicholas Hawksmoor had such a famous master, for he deserves to be remembered for his own abilities as one of the finest British architects of any era.

FRIDAY 7TH JUNE

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING                                                                          EH

Notice is hereby given that the 50th Annual General Meeting of Greyfriars Arts and Recreation Society will be held on Friday June 7th 2019

There will be eight vacancies on the Committee and nomination forms for new members will be on the Welcome desk during May. The vacancies arise because the Vice Chairman is retiring, five members have completed their terms of office, and two remain unfilled from previous years. Some members are prepared to stand again, but we would like some newer members to join us too.

Items for inclusion on the agenda should be given in writing to either Sue Lindsey or Eunice Harrison by 31st May, after which none can be accepted. There will be a slide show of pictures from last year’s activities after the interval, so please pass any you may have to Andrew Ireland by 31st May.
