LIVING THROUGH THE COVENTRY BLITZ -OLGA STEW          MH

Olga Stew was a 9 year old girl in the Coventry Blitz. Chris West brings us a very personal story of his Grandmother’s experiences in Coventry during the Second World War. This talk will bring home to us the reality for children and families living through this period.

 

FRIDAY 26TH JUNE

POETRY EVENING                                                          EH/CJ

Poetry ‘To Cheer the Heart,’ is the theme for this evening -nothing offensive or contentious please, just words to make us all feel better. Volunteers, please step forward and let Carol J or Eunice know your choice of poem to make this a happy summer’s evening. We will also be enjoying strawberries and cream tonight.

FRIDAY JULY 3RD

CAKES4CASUALTIES SL

Our speaker tonight is Kath Ryan, who after taking a cake into hospital as a 'one off’ visit is still doing so 17 years later.  She takes cakes to our injured servicemen and women which boosts their morale.  Alan Titchmarsh designed a garden, complete with fully fitted kitchen on his televised programme, for her to entertain visitors.  So be surprised tonight to hear exactly how many cakes she makes each week.


 

WEDNESDAY 8TH JULY

STEPPING OUT - PRIORY THEATRE, KENILWORTH

This is a warm and very funny play about a group of women (and one man) who attend weekly tap-dancing classes in a dingy North London church hall. Mavis, a former professional dancer teaches the bumbling tappers whilst mediating the dramas that erupt among the motley crew. When they learn they are to perform in a local charity showcase, the pressure is on! Will they be ready in time? Tickets are £15 payable by 3rd July to Bob Clemons.

FRIDAY JULY 10TH

THE FOSSE WAY                                                                    JS

Rick Thompson’s talk on July 10th will be about the 230-mile long Fosse Way, constructed by the Romans shortly after their invasion, to protect the territory they had conquered in the south of England. His latest book, ‘A Year on the Fosse’ follows the road month by month from Lincolnshire to Devon, telling the stories of the towns and cities that grew up along the way, and the key episodes along the route that changed English history. It also describes the wildlife to be found in reserves and green spaces along the route as the seasons unfold.  There’s folklore, bird identification and some unexpected stories.

 

FRIDAY JULY 17TH

FINGERPRINTS FOR DETECTION AND INTRIGUE                       SL

Our speaker tonight Sue Clegg, who has been many times before, was a police officer and fingerprint expert. She will take us into the fascinating world of 'dabs', and reveal its history, along with personal anecdotes and stories from the 'thin blue line'. So come and hear this most interesting presentation.

TALES FROM THE DRIVER’S SEAT                                              MI

Our speaker, Jess Henderson was the first ever lady London bus driver and tonight will regale us of her many experiences. Several of her stories are highly amusing, so I’m sure this will be a very entertaining evening.

FILM NIGHT - THE NUN AND THE BUCKET BC

'Looking Back at Nuneaton' brings this unique local archive, a selection of wonderful old photographs and some remarkable old film to create an entertaining record of a fascinating period in Nuneaton's past. We then witness Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet) and her long suffering husband Richard, as Hyacinth fights the ever declining moral fabric of Britain ... just whatever you do . . . don't brush against her walls!
 

FRIDAY 7TH AUGUST

LIFE IN GHANA                                                               MI

Last year, our speaker, Vicky Owen gave a lively talk about the Salvation Army and revealed that she had spent five years in Ghana. We have persuaded her to come back to us and tell us of her experiences working for the Salvation Army in Ghana.
 

FRIDAY 14TH AUGUST

BERTIE GREATHERD’S GRAND TOUR OF EUROPE                EH

Tonight Anne Langley is going to tell us about Bertie Greatherd’s 18th Century Tour of Europe. Bertie was a one time owner of Guy’s Cliffe and his tour promises to be very interesting.

 

 

FRIDAY 21ST AUGUST

THE GREENFLY AND THE ROSE – SOE                                        BC

Tonight we welcome back to Greyfriars Paul Thompson, who always gives us in-depth talks on such varied topics. Tonight he will be talking about The Greenfly and the Rose - SOE. The SOE (Special Operations Executive) was a British organisation formed in 1940 to conduct espionage, sabotage and reconnaissance in German occupied Europe and to aid local resistance movements during World War II. This will be another of Paul's edge of your seat evenings.

FRIDAY 28TH AUGUST

A QUIZ NIGHT WITH A DIFFERENCE                                          GT

Prepare yourself for another quirky quiz with a difference with the return of your quiz master, Jo Chima. There will be some traditional rounds requiring knowledge and a bit of brain, but also some more unusual rounds for those of you who are more creative and think outside of the box!!! It promises to be a fun evening.

SKITTLES EVENING AT BRANDON CLUB at 6.00 for 6.30 – 9.30                                                                                                                         JS/KGT

We shall be holding our Annual Skittles Evening at Brandon Social Club on Friday 11th September, 2026. postcode CV8 3HW. The cost will be £10 including fish or chicken and chips supper. Sign up on the notice board. Payment due by 28th August at the latest. This event is open to family and friends too.
